NFL SAFETY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdhS-t1F83o No longer can running backs protect themselves and "lay the hits". Why does the nfl do this because in the end arent they supposed to make money. I cant imagine lowering the "excitement" of football can help promote and make money for the league or the sport. But, the adverse effects of this is we will see more and more soft tissue injuries such as knees, shoulders and elbows. Because more and more players will be "hitting" low and less "brain injury" and more physical injury. How will the league respond to this.

  1. I agree with Alex that runningbacks not being able to lay the big hits anymore will lower the fans excitemnt for the sport. But I dont think that this new rule was a bad idea because it will make a lot of players less injury prone which will save the league money because it will be less money they will have to spend on medical care. Unfortuanely the players that were more dependant on their power rather than their speed will be at an disadvantage. But to stay as a top competitor runningbacks will have to become more agile.

  2. These new rules have, at least for me, taken a big excitement factor out of the game. I always watched partly just to see big hits on players, but now every time there is a big hit, it is a penalty. I understand that the NFL is trying to make the game safer but the players knew what they signed up for on draft day and all that this new rule does is replace head injuries with lower body injuries. Already this season, I have seen an enormous amount of leg, hamstring, knee, and foot injuries far exceeding the amount from last year. I believe no matter what you do, there will always be injuries in football, it's unfortunate but that's just how it is. Not allowing running backs to lower their shoulders does not solve anything but make them more susceptible to injuries. The NFL and players need to realize that is is their choice to play in the NFL and they do not need to play if they think that it is too dangerous. Football is not meant to be for "everyone" so let the big hits happen and bring back that excitement that has so long been lost in the NFL today.
